Why Liquid Mineralisation Changes Everything About Home Water

Reverse osmosis is one of the most powerful water purification technologies available. It removes contaminants, heavy metals, PFAS, nitrates and much more — delivering highly purified water straight from your tap.

But pure is not the same as perfect.

The result is water with an extremely low TDS (total dissolved solids). That sounds ideal. In practice, pure RO water can:

  • Taste flat, empty or faintly acidic

The Market's Answer: Mineral Cartridges

Some RO systems now offer a remineralisation stage — typically a post-filter cartridge that adds minerals back after purification. The concept is sound. The execution is where it falls short.

Cartridge-based remineralisation has three inherent weaknesses:

1. Inconsistent dosing

Mineral pickup from a cartridge depends on flow rate, water temperature, contact time and how much water has already passed through. The result is water that may contain different mineral levels from one glass to the next.

2. Hygiene risk

After reverse osmosis, water is highly purified and essentially free of bacteria. Adding extra cartridge layers after the membrane introduces new surfaces in contact with that clean water. If cartridges are not replaced correctly, they can become a biological risk point.

3. No real control

Standard mineral cartridges offer no way to adjust mineral levels to taste or to preference. You get whatever the cartridge delivers — and that changes as the cartridge ages.

4. Unclear Mineral Bioavailability

Mineral absorption depends partly on solubility. The NIH notes that magnesium forms which dissolve well in liquid are generally absorbed more completely than less soluble forms.
